The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a country located in the southeastern part of South America. It is home to about 3.3 million people, of whom 1.8 million live in the capital, Montevideo, and its metropolitan area. Uruguay’s only land border is with the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul to the north. To the west lies the Uruguay River, and to the southwest is the Río de la Plata estuary. The country borders Argentina only at certain points along these rivers, while to the southeast it faces the Atlantic Ocean.
