Guatá Scholarship: Doctoral Opportunities for Indigenous Researchers in France

The International Relations Office at UFRN invites the academic community, particularly doctoral students of Indigenous heritage, to apply for the 2026 Guatá Scholarship. This initiative aims to strengthen Franco-Brazilian university cooperation and promote diversity in scientific research, enabling Brazilian Indigenous researchers to conduct part of their studies at elite higher education institutions and research centers in France.

Application Timeline

  • Prospective candidates must strictly adhere to the following schedule:

  • Application Deadline: March 2nd, 2026 (at 11:59 PM, Brasília time).

  • Interviews with Pre-selected Candidates: March 9th to 13th, 2026.

  • Final Results Announcement: April 2026.

  • Mobility Start Date (France): September 2026.

Benefits and Funding

The Guatá Scholarship provides one of the most comprehensive support packages for "sandwich" doctorates, covering:

  • Monthly Stipend: Between €1,300 and €1,700 (depending on the destination city).

  • Airfare: Round-trip tickets (Brazil-France-Brazil) funded by CAPES.

  • Settlement Allowance: Initial funds to assist with arrival costs in France.

  • Health Insurance and Visa: Comprehensive health coverage in France and a full waiver of student visa fees.

  • Logistical Support: Assistance from the Campus France agency in finding housing and integration.

Key Requirements and Documentation

To be eligible, candidates must be regularly enrolled in a doctoral program at UFRN (in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year) and must not have previously received a sandwich doctorate scholarship. Two specific items require special attention:

Declaration of Ethnic Affiliation: According to the official guide, it is mandatory to present a declaration signed by two different Indigenous leaders, duly identified.

Motivation Letter: This must include a narrative of the candidate's life journey, their research interests, and the specific benefits this mobility will bring to their personal and professional path.

French Language Support

As per the program guidelines, UFRN, through the SRI, is committed to providing free French language classes for the selected candidates, ensuring they are linguistically prepared before departure.
