The United States of America (USA or US) is the fourth-largest country in the world by area and the third most populous. It is a federal democratic presidential republic composed of 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several dependent territories in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Most of the United States is located in North America, south of Canada, with the state of Alaska to the northwest of Canada. Hawaii is located in the Pacific Ocean and is considered part of Oceania. The main portion of the country borders Canada to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east (with the closest territory being Bermuda), the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It also shares maritime borders with the Bahamas and Cuba via the Florida Strait.
