The Republic of Peru is a South American country bordered to the north by Ecuador and Colombia, to the east by Brazil and Bolivia, and to the south by Chile. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean. The Peruvian territory was home to the Caral civilization, one of the oldest in the world, as well as the Inca Empire, considered the largest pre-Columbian state in the Americas. Its territory was elevated to a Viceroyalty by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. Peru is a democratic presidential republic divided into 25 regions. Its geography is diverse, ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coast to the snow-capped peaks of the Andes and the Amazon rainforest, providing the country with a wealth of natural resources.
